The Effectiveness of Educational Intervention on Utilization of Antenatal Care Protocols among Pregnant Women in a Tertiary Hospital in Southwest Nigeria

Abstract:

Pregnant women can experience the full benefits of antenatal care services when they utilize antenatal clinics regularly and as when due. This study seeks to assess the effectiveness of educational intervention on the utilization of Antenatal Care protocols among pregnant women attending Antenatal Clinic in LUTH, Lagos State, Nigeria. The study adopted a quasi-experimental research design, experimental (interventional group)-Control (non—interventional group). One hundred and sixty (160) consenting pregnant women were consecutively recruited into the study and conveniently assigned to either group in a ratio 1:1 until the desired sample size was achieved. The study was carried out in three phases: pre-intervention, intervention and the post evaluation phases over a period of 8 weeks. The results revealed that most respondents were between the ages of 28-32 years, 31.3% in the experimental group (EG) and 41.3% in the control group (CG). The results also revealed that utilization of ANC protocols among pregnant women was (Experimental (83.8%) and Control (80%); and the post intervention was Experimental (95%) and Control (82.5%). There was significant association between the parity and utilization level (P=0.021). The Wilcoxon signed Rank test results revealed a statistically (Z = -2.810, p = 0.005), significant difference between pre-intervention and post-intervention on level of utilization of ANC protocols. This shows that the educational intervention was effective. This study concluded that the educational intervention had positive effect on the utilization of ANC protocols, therefore, there is need to strengthen and intensify antenatal education among pregnant women using appropriate teaching strategies.
