Medical Management of Oral Submucous Fibrosis - A Narrative Review
Abstract:
Oral submucous fibrosis, an oral potentially malignant disorder is a prevalent condition especially in the Asian subcontinent. Medical management is an integral part in the treatment of OSF. Evidence based practice with efficient protocol and treatment plan to address the patients concern is the current strategy applied. Though several factors play a crucial role in choosing the appropriate drug, lifestyle change, and habit cessation are the preliminary steps towards the methodological and systematic approach in management of OSF. So far none of the reported studies have examined the beneficial role of therapies in preventing malignant transformation in OSF patients. Understanding the importance of medical management in OSF vital as it remains a dilemma for oral medicine practitioners. Literature is abundant with variety of Anti-inflammatory drugs, Immunomodulators, Proteolytic/fibrolytic drugs, Antioxidants, Vitamins and micronutrients, Novel therapies for treatment of OSF. Therefore, we provide a working classification of drugs in OSF along with their mechanism of action, formulation, administration, bioavailability, safety profile, treatment outcomes and adverse effects of the drugs.References:
