The UGBC Library’s Experiences across the Pre-, During-, and Post-COVID-19 Timelines
Abstract:
The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a wave of disruptions worldwide and its effect on the higher education systems significantly impacted their service units, among them being their academic libraries. This study discusses the transformation of the University of Guyana Berbice Campus (UGBC) Library operations and services across three phases: Pre-, During-, and Post-COVID-19 periods. This study utilises a content analysis, a qualitative research approach to discuss the UGBC Library’s experience before, during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the findings are that prior to the pandemic, the library was heavily dependent on traditional modes of operations, with the face-to-face services, the physical resources, and integrated minimal digital applications into its operations. In the face of the pandemic, although the abrupt and forced response to remote operations exposed various weaknesses, it also accelerated digital adoption and resulted in forward thinking and innovative work behaviour. During the pandemic timeline, the library first adopted full online operations, then gradually incorporated the hybrid service delivery model, pulling together both the physical and digital service modalities. Library operations in the post covid period can be described as being a continuation of the hybrid service model. The study concludes that despite the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the UGBC Library utilised the experience as an opportunity to transform its services and build greater resilience for the future. Some future recommendations for the UGBC Library include adopting a flexible work schedule, strengthening the hybrid service model, improving ICT infrastructure, and engaging in continuous Professional Development (PD) activities.References:
